Incorporating Technology in Your Teaching
WORKSHOP "Incorporating Technology in Teaching"
By Bobby L. Smiley and Thomas Padilla
Certification in College Teaching Institute
May 14th, 2015, MSU Union Ballroom
NB: I also fulfilled this competency with the LLT 841 course work described in Core Competency 1 and several other workshops listed and logged in Additional documents.
Description of the competency/workshop
A Foreign Language educator should be aware of the benefits of technology and know about tools in order to incorporate it in the classroom. They should particularly be aware of tools offered by their university.
The workshop “Incorporating Technology in Teaching” presented some tools and online resources that addresses these expectations from a Foreign Language educator.
Description and rationale
The Power point on Technology from Bobby L. Smiley and Thomas Padilla points out with screenshots some useful resources that can be found at MSU, such as the section Digital humanities from the library, CREATE, Matrix and ELI.
My students in FRN 201 used google docs while working on their screenplay project to write their scenario (script) in groups in a collaborative way. As I was walking around the classroom while they were working on it, I could not help but notice that they were correcting each other and asking questions to the group to go further. Attached is a well written example of the final product. Google docs as a piece of technology has been efficient for my students in realizing their projects.
Interpretation/Reflection on workshop
What skills and techniques did I learn that will help me become a better educator?
First, I learned about threshold concepts and learning outcomes related to technology. I now know that I need to keep in mind the goal when preparing activities using technology.
Second, I learned about some tools such as “juxta commons” (to improve different versions of drafts) and “voyant” (for text analysis). I have been reintroduced to “google docs” (for collaboration) and I learned about “kanbanflow” (for project management).
What things am I still uncertain about regarding this topic that I need to investigate further in the future?
I am still uncertain about how to incorporate these tools in my classes, especially when I already have guidelines (a syllabus already created for TA’s). Even when possible, I am still wondering if I will be able to select the tools useful for my goals.
How can I apply materials from this session to my own class to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning?
I can apply those materials to sketch an activity which will be the base of future lesson plans.
I can use the tools presented during the workshop in my classrooms, especially Google docs.
